A brighter smile, without guessing
Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel to break down the pigmented molecules that have worked their way into your enamel over years of coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. The tooth structure itself is not changed; the stain within it is lightened.
The supervised part matters. We check first for decay, cracks, gum recession, and exposed roots. Applying bleaching gel over an untreated cavity or onto exposed root surface is how people end up in real pain, and it is the most common problem with unsupervised whitening.
We also set expectations honestly. Existing crowns, veneers, and fillings do not whiten. If you brighten the teeth around an older front-tooth filling, that filling will suddenly stand out, and you should know that before starting rather than after.

The cause gets diagnosed first
Surface stain from coffee responds well to bleaching. Discoloration from trauma, tetracycline, or a dying nerve does not, and needs an entirely different approach. Bleaching the wrong problem wastes money.
Custom trays fit your teeth
A tray made from your impressions holds gel against the teeth and keeps it off the gums. Stock trays leak, which is where most chemical burns to the gums come from.
Sensitivity gets managed
We can adjust the concentration and wear time, and recommend a desensitizing product, rather than you simply enduring it or abandoning the treatment.
Restorations get accounted for
We tell you in advance which existing dental work will not change color, so there are no surprises when the surrounding teeth lighten.
Nothing gets whitened over a problem
Untreated decay, cracked fillings, and gum disease are addressed first. Whitening does not fix any of those, and can make them hurt.

You get the gel, the trays, and clear instructions on wear time. Follow the schedule rather than doubling up. More gel for longer causes sensitivity, not faster results.

If you’re considering teeth whitening, it’s normal to have questions. Here’s what patients ask Dr. Dunn most often.
How much whiter will my teeth get?
It varies a great deal with your starting shade and what is causing the discoloration. Yellow-toned staining from food and drink typically responds well. Grey tones respond less predictably. We will give you a realistic expectation after examining your teeth rather than promising a number of shades.
How long does it last?
Usually somewhere between several months and a couple of years, depending on your diet and whether you smoke. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco all bring the stain back. Keeping your trays means touch-ups are inexpensive.
Will it hurt?
Some people get temporary sensitivity to cold during treatment. It normally fades within a day or two of finishing. If it becomes uncomfortable, stop and call us. We can lower the concentration or shorten the wear time rather than have you push through.
Is it safe for enamel?
Supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations does not damage enamel. The risks come from unsupervised use: gel on untreated decay, ill-fitting trays leaking onto gums, and people using far more product for far longer than directed.
Will it whiten my crowns and fillings?
No. Porcelain and composite do not respond to bleaching gel. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, they will stay the shade they are, and may need replacing afterwards to match. We flag this before you start.
What about whitening strips from the store?
They work for mild surface staining on healthy teeth, and they are inexpensive. What they cannot do is diagnose. If your discoloration is from a dying nerve or an old restoration, strips will not touch it and you will have spent months finding that out.
Why is one tooth darker than the others?
A single dark tooth often means the nerve inside has died, sometimes years after an injury. External bleaching will not fix it. That tooth needs assessment and possibly root canal treatment followed by internal whitening or a crown.
Can I whiten while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We generally suggest waiting. There is no strong evidence of harm, but whitening is entirely elective and there is no reason to take even a theoretical risk. It will keep.
Does insurance cover it?
Almost never. Whitening is considered cosmetic, so plan on it being out of pocket. We give you the cost in writing before you commit, and Cherry and CareCredit are available for larger cosmetic plans.
How soon before an event should I whiten?
Finish at least a week or two beforehand. That gives any sensitivity time to settle and lets the shade stabilize, since teeth rehydrate and settle slightly after treatment ends.
