Treatment you can actually get through
Sedation is not one thing. It is a range, from taking the edge off while you stay fully aware, through to being completely asleep. Which one suits you depends on the procedure, your medical history, and honestly how you feel about being in the chair.
Lighter sedation leaves you awake and able to respond, just relaxed and less bothered by what is happening. Deeper levels leave most people with little or no memory of the appointment. General anesthesia means you are fully asleep and is reserved for surgical cases or patients for whom nothing else is workable.
What makes the deeper end possible here is having a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon on site. Dr. Nicholas Petti holds a general anesthesia permit, which is uncommon in a general dental practice and means complex or lengthy work can happen in one appointment rather than being split across many.
Every option starts with your medical history. Current medications, heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, and previous reactions to anesthesia all affect what is appropriate. That conversation is not a formality.

People who have avoided dentistry for years
Dental anxiety is extremely common and it compounds. The longer you stay away, the more there is to face. Sedation is often what breaks that cycle.
Long or complex appointments
Several hours of surgical work is hard for anyone to sit through. Sedation makes it possible to do in one visit what would otherwise take four.
A strong gag reflex
For some people this makes routine treatment genuinely difficult, particularly on back teeth. Sedation usually resolves it.
Difficulty getting numb
Some patients metabolize local anesthetic quickly or have anatomy that makes profound numbness hard to achieve. Sedation changes the equation.
Patients with special needs
Where staying still for an extended period is not realistic, sedation allows treatment to be done safely and without distress.
How sedation is arranged
Consultation and medical history
We go through your health history, medications, allergies, and any previous experience with anesthesia. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, tell us. It directly affects the plan.
Choosing the level
We match the option to the procedure and to you. Lighter is generally better where it will do the job. You get the risks, what to expect, and the cost in writing before agreeing to anything.
Pre-appointment instructions
Depending on the level, you may need to fast beforehand and stop or adjust certain medications. For anything beyond the mildest option you will need a responsible adult to drive you home.
During treatment
You are monitored throughout. Local anesthetic is still used alongside sedation so the site is properly numb, which is what keeps you comfortable as it wears off.
Recovery
You rest until you are steady, then go home with someone. Expect to feel groggy for the remainder of the day. No driving, no alcohol, and no important decisions until the following morning.
Dental insurance coverage
We want getting care to be easy. Call us with your plan details and our team will check your benefits and explain what is covered before treatment starts.
Ask us about your coverageHave questions about sedation & general anesthesia?
If you’re considering sedation & general anesthesia, it’s normal to have questions. Here’s what patients ask Dr. Dunn most often.
What levels of sedation do you offer?
From mild relaxation where you remain awake and responsive, through deeper sedation where most people remember little of the appointment, up to general anesthesia where you are fully asleep. The right level depends on the procedure and on you.
Will I be completely asleep?
Only with general anesthesia. Lighter options leave you conscious and able to respond, though relaxed and often with hazy recollection afterwards. We will be specific about what you should expect from the option you choose.
Is it safe?
Sedation is routine in dentistry when it is properly assessed and monitored. Safety comes from a thorough medical history, appropriate monitoring throughout, and the right training. Dr. Nicholas Petti is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and holds a general anesthesia permit.
Will I need someone to drive me?
For anything beyond the mildest option, yes. You need a responsible adult who can take you home and stay with you for a few hours. This is not negotiable, and appointments do get postponed when people arrive alone.
Can I eat beforehand?
It depends on the level of sedation. Deeper sedation and general anesthesia require fasting for a set period beforehand. You will get specific written instructions, and following them exactly matters for your safety.
What if I take medication for anxiety already?
Tell us exactly what and how much. Several common anxiety and sleep medications interact with sedatives, and the combination changes the dosing. This is one of the most important things on the health history.
I have sleep apnea. Does that rule sedation out?
Not necessarily, but it absolutely changes the assessment, since sedation affects the airway. Tell us about a diagnosis and whether you use CPAP or an oral appliance. This is one area where our dental sleep medicine experience is genuinely useful.
Will I feel any pain?
Local anesthetic is used alongside sedation, so the treatment site is properly numb. Sedation manages awareness and anxiety; the local anesthetic manages pain. They do different jobs and are used together.
How long until I feel normal?
Mild sedation wears off within a few hours. Deeper sedation and general anesthesia leave most people groggy for the remainder of the day, with normal function returning by the next morning. Plan not to work that day.
Does insurance cover sedation?
Coverage varies widely. Some plans cover sedation for surgical procedures or for documented medical necessity, and cover much less for anxiety alone. We check your benefits and give you a written estimate beforehand, with financing available.
Can my child be sedated?
It depends on age, health, and what treatment is needed. Come in and talk to us first. We will be candid about whether sedation is the right answer or whether a different approach would serve your child better.
